DURBAN
Our Durban Programme
Surfers Not Street Children began in Durban in 1998, originally as the Durban Street Team. A team of child and youth care workers and social workers worked directly on the streets, building relationships of trust with children living there and supporting them to leave street life and return to community life.
Almost three decades later, much has changed, but our core goal remains the same: providing children with a positive alternative to street life.
Over the years, our work has contributed to a significant reduction in the number of children living on Durban’s streets. While we continue to support and rescue children who are street-connected, our work today increasingly focuses on prevention and diversion.
We work with children growing up in Durban’s Point district, providing surfing, mentorship, care, nutrition and a safe community that helps protect them from street life and its associated risks, including gangs, drugs, exploitation, violence, hunger and disease.
This shift from primarily rescuing children already living on the streets to preventing children from reaching the streets in the first place is perhaps one of the greatest successes of our work over the past three decades.
Our Durban programme is run by a dedicated local team of child and youth care workers, social workers, surf coaches, water-safety staff and administrators, operating from two bases: The Surf Club and The Surfhouse.
The Durban Programme is run by a team consisting of childcare workers, surf coaches and a qualified water safety crew
The Surf Club
The Surf Club is our beach base at New Pier, one of Durban’s premier surfing beaches. This is where children take part in our surfing programme alongside ongoing mentorship and care.
Our centre provides surfboards, wetsuits and everything the children need to get into the ocean safely. Our fully trained water-safety team ensures that swimming ability and ocean safety always come first. Children can also develop their swimming skills in the pool directly opposite our beach base before progressing into the surf.
The Surf Club operates after school during the week and throughout weekends and school holidays, providing a positive, safe and inspiring place for children to spend their time.
The Surf Club is led by Sandile Mqadi.
The Surf House
The Surfhouse is our Durban headquarters and the heart of our care and support programme.
Open every day, it provides children from the Point district with a safe space where they can access our child and youth care workers and social workers, receive nutritious meals and take part in a range of informal activities.
The Surfhouse also includes a high-speed internet and computer lab, giving children a place to do homework and access technology, as well as simply relax, play and enjoy being children.
The two bases work together as one programme. On non-school days, a child might surf in the morning, return to the Surfhouse for food and support, and head back to the beach to surf again in the afternoon.
Together, The Surf Club and The Surfhouse provide a safe community where children can surf, eat, learn, belong and build a future away from street life.
